Main Food Source

Rats should get store bought pellet mixes. The mix should have a high variety of pellets and seeds and should be made for rats. A constant supply of food will cause obesity so rats should be fed twice a day. They should be fed when they are awake, at dawn and dusk is best. Rats should have between 15 and 20 grams of food per day (5-6 grams of food per 100 grams of body weight for the rat).

Your rats can have things like freeze dried mealworms and cooked egg for protein.

Fruits and Veggies

Fruit should be given about once or twice a week while veggies should be given every day to every other day. Fruit and vegetables should be part of the count of how much food your rats get in a day, not in addition to the amount.

(Some) safe fruits: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, bananas

(Some) safe vegetables: broccoli, spinach, asparagus, celery leaves, carrots, cucumber

* There are always more things that are safe for your rats. If you do not know if something is, search it up! Also, your rats may not like everything, so find out what your rats like over time!

Herbs and Sprays

Herbs and sprays can be put around your rats' cage for enrichment as your rats find herbs and picks seeds off of sprays.

(Some) safe herbs and sprays: flax seeds, millet, basil, parsley, mint

Some Unsafe Foods

Onion, citrus fruits, walnuts, rhubarb, grapes, raisins, chocolate

Dairy and sugar can cause health problems so if they are given they should be treats and NOT very often.
